Three Deer in My Yard

Three young bucks, each

sprouting velvet-covered

horns atop a crown,

had quit the woods

for open spaces:

my backyard ...

They had then rested

comfortably in green grass

on rounded tummies

under drizzling rainfall,

and flicked their ears

from time to time,

and chewed fibrous cuds.

In time I noticed them

and watched surreptitiously

from just behind the living-room

window.

One buck said to the others:

"Do not turn around!

I spy a rude bald guy

behind the blinds who watches us.

Perhaps if we ignore him,

he'll go away eventually."

The others merely nodded

in sedate accord.

I watched and watched ...

and watched some more.

Nothing changed. At all.

Then, growing bored, I went

about my normal business.

When next I looked for them,

perhaps an hour'd gone by,

and phooey! they had left.

This really made me smile

What a wonderful sight. The deer here are much more timid. We are surrounded by open countryside and woodland but they never come close. I love the voices and personification used to tell this wonderful humourus story. The velvet covered horns atop a crown - excellent description. Did they ever come back? Merry Xmas:-) Kaz It's impossible to smile on the outside without feeling better on the inside.

Oh, Yes

From time to time they did. And sometimes they'd play with one another ... running, jumping, kicking up heels. Much fun to see. Had me laughing out loud, in fact. But not too loud, lest they hear me through the closed door. Thanx, Chuck

Three Deer in my Yard---comments

I love deer, and your imagery and descriptions fit great. I love the occasional "thoughts" you gave of the deer. All-in-all, very neat reading. Thanks much for sharing. Pat.

This is really cute! I love deer, and I think if deer could read, they'd enjoy this a lot! ~Lynn (Dwarfie) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ~ "Bush is listening.... use big words!" ~ "Your inferiority complex is better than mine..."
