FOOTSTEPS

FOOTSTEPS

A surreptitious shuffle of feet:
the first faltering footstep edges out:
first steps forward are hard to take.

So out of practice, unsure,
slow of pace in the unfamiliar dance,
feet move onward, step follows step.

My feet can side-to-sidestep,
leap hurdles, seek the safest niche
in a sheer rock face.

My feet can break brittle bones,
play games, carve a cryptic code
on glistening sand.

My feet are fancy dancers,
strong in the solemn stride,
obedient.

My feet forge ahead,
change direction, patter patterns.
My feet can precisely pause:
but my feet can't step back.
