SMART ENOUGH

Can they make a weapon smart enough
to hear
an anguished baby's lost and lonely cry
and veer
to splinter stone not now, not ever, fragile bone?

Are there men of terror smart enough
to leave
the mindless killing fields of hate
and grieve
the hapless, guiltless people dead and gone?

Can we train our agents smart enough
to learn
the rightful verities of fellow men
and spurn
the cold and callous calumnies of fools?

Can we make our warriors smart enough
to fight
against a blind unreasoning vengeance
and right
our wrongs without the carnage of the charnel house?

Are there men of religion smart enough
to teach
the living truth of peace and love
and reach
the least vestige of good in the vilest, blackest hearts?

And are our leaders smart enough
to heed
the long and aching need for gentle lives
and lead
us safely through the bitter dark to fulgent light?

And surely God is smart enough
to hear
our mounting urgent heartsick prayers
and steer
our floundering, foundering ship of hope to shore?

And poets must be smart enough
to care
enough to pen the machinations of the soul
but despair
that all too often readers heed the mob and shun the heart.

Someone said, "smart weapons" ... Weapons? Smart? Oh please....!

a thought-provoking poem

I like the cover picture very much. This is a very thought-provoking poem. On the one hand, I see your point that the very concept of "smart" weapons can be thought of as an oxymoron. Perhaps not exactly an oxymoron, but certainly the two concepts are not compatible. On the other hand, in some sense the poem implies the common fallacy that something that is smart is necessarily good. For me, being smart or intelligent, has nothing to do with being good, or moral. Why can't a bomb be smart? That doesn't mean it has a heart. The military calls laser-guided weapons "smart" because they are more accurate than traditional weapons. Is it smart enough to distinguish between a baby and a building? No, certainly not, but unfortunately I don't think it was ever intended to do that! Michael

First thanks for commenting

First thanks for commenting on the cover picture - I do enjoy making these little designs. The picture is cut from one of my original oil paintings http://www.flickr.com/photos/7911705@N07/467037275/sizes/o/ ... as for 'smart' = 'intelligent' this is a relatively recent US English import into UK English [for most of life 'smart' = 'well-dressed/chic'] and has arrived here complete with fallacy attached! Thanks for the correction. I still don't like the juxtaposition of smart and weapon - since smart does at least imply sentience, though of course I fully understand the military usage. Thanks again for your comment - I appreciate it greatly. btw this was a hastily written piece - not much more than a rant I suppose. OZYMANDIAS SINGS is a much more considered response http://www.neopoet.com/node/5047 Mike "not all matterings of mind equal one violet" ~ e e cummings ~

Loved it!

I completely agree that this is a real thought-provoker, and I love how the end of each first sentence ended with the words 'smart enough' and that each stanza was written in the form of questions...I love reading things that elicit a powerful feeling, and this definitely did...Great poem!
