Private Autumn Poem

Autumn crept upon me in secret this year. I know it's October, and the sky has changed for sure with its early pregnancy and soft, grey clouds. I looked outside my office window while doing paperwork this evening and saw leaves on the ground. Heard them, actually, rustling, scattering by the full length windows. They're like dry paper from a thousand year old Bible. Perhaps I would call them crisp, whereas you would call them brittle. It doesn't really matter, semantics. To me the air is full in October in the autumn, and I feel most alive. Up in the trees are my colors, amber to remind me of sap, brown for the Earth, deep red; the color of the new sky, and burnt orange for butternut squash. I am color blind, though and cannot see these colors with my eyes only in my brain, in my heart. I love these colors wherever I see them. I identify most with the squash, with the pumpkin. These are vegetables who must be carved, and roasted. A little butter, brown sugar and they are magnificent. But the unskilled make jack - o - lanterns with these things, my favorites. Most people are more suited to the springtime veggies, the morel and asparagus. Those are flashes in the pan. I need more depth than that.

I am not a critic...

but I love fall...therefore I love your poem. Your words made me feel it, made me imagine I was in Ohio in October beneath a flaming maple tree selecting leaves. Your poem made me smell cinnamon and spiced apples...and I tasted warm pumpkin pie. I love fall and I loved your poem! Thanks, Wolfy.

wow Box!

I'm humbled and honored you would even consider reading one of my poems out loud... to people no less! Of course you can, just remember all the caveots(sic) due credit, blah blah blah. (someone once actually plagerized one of my poems at a reading... that I was attending! He said "I wrote this a couple of days ago..." and it was funny because the place actually sold the book that the particular poem was in. Mark

This is Stunning

One of the best poems I have ever read about autumn. The images and sensations you have created are incredible. Awesome work. Kaz x It's impossible to smile on the outside without feeling better on the inside.

It makes me a bit jealous.

We don't really get Autumns and Springs like you do because our climate is so temperate and most of the native flora is evergreen, gum trees, not pine. Still, at least I get to read this, which feels like experiencing it. Many thanks cheers, Jess

Loving autumn

myself makes me feel every word here. You have fine pacing befitting the autumn. Your choice of words is appropriate, too. But I would have loved it even better if you hadn´t used so many lines. E.g."To me the air is full in October, in the autumn/ and I feel most alive." makes a smoother read than your version, I think. (Something I myself learned from rsscheerer, thanks again, I used to break up my sentences in very much the same way, which made my poems seem abrupt, you see) Don´t worry though, it´s still a really great piece! atmospheric and gorgeous

poem. autumn is one of the most beautiful times of the year, and though you read a million poems trying to glorify, i think that here you have a creeping grace ("I know it’s October/and the sky has changed/for sure/with its early pregnancy and soft, grey clouds.") this sends a shiver of appreciation gratitude, and recognition of quite the same feeling down my spine. all flattery aside, i really have no criticisms of this poem i could honestly offer. i'm going to print this one out. great job!
