Chinese

We got a kitten, Siamese
my little sister could only grok Chinese
hence his name.

As a kitten I saw him stalk
a kookaburra,
twice his body weight.
This predator bird could have killed him,
with a peck
or the more traditional method,
carry him to a height and drop him.
but instead played.
Each time he quivered his little bottom
and pounced,
kooka elegantly lifted,
just enough,
to let the kit fly
through empty space,
confused
and come back for more.
It went on for an hour.
I found my animal souls.

He grew unspeyed
to be a warrior
in the tradition of his ancestors.

He killed at will,
our neighbours mourned and resented,
their missing lovelies,
but who can prove a cat?

He knew one word of English,
snake
whenever he heard the word
he would go,
into the bush
and come back with his prize.
Most grateful cats bring mice and lizards.
He was not grateful,
he knew his worth.
He brought back
tiger snakes,
black snakes,
most deadly of all brown ones.
As trophies.

sure he got bitten,
would sleep for three days and go out hunting.
sure he got hurt,
when possum bites got infected
he came back from the vet
shaved from head to haunch
a scar crossed fighter,
Frankenstein cat!

I loved him for his entire lack of sycophancy
He want attention?
He climb up you claw by claw.
He don’t?
Don’t even try.

Hear this!
He sat be-sunning himself in the driveway.
Alsation cat-killer came pounding up roaring.
Chinese sat.
To the last possible moment,
and calmly took its nose off
with one swipe.
alsation fleeing screetching.
Chinese sunning.

He liked pot.
Would jump onto my desk when I blazed up
and sit in front,
inhaling
and if i played The Doors or Bowie
he would lean against the speaker,
rocking.

Chinese got ill.
Couldn’t eat,
vomitted a lot,
finally vet said,
leukemia.

I held him in my arms as the fatal yellow shot went in.
I felt him leave.
I have never had a better human friend.

such a staunch friend,

with the spirit of the indomitable mongoose, this feline! My Cali also nods in approval, she. I wish I could say more, but suffice it to say I am touched and amazed by this poem, but moreso, by your friend, Chinese. Mark W.

Chinese (comments)

What I like most about this poem is the idea that inspiration can be found in unexpected places – the human instinct to root for the underdog – it’s not just an American trait but a human trait – the ability to have a connection with something outside of the self - to reach out to the natural world and make connections we are sometimes not able to do with humans. Have you ever read Charles Bukowski’s “One Tough Mother Fucker” or Richard Katrovas’ “A Dog and a boy,” These poems have a similar tone to what you’re writing here in your poem “Chinese.” Both Bukowski draws inspiration from the survival of a tough cat – Katrovas shows the connection between a tough boy and his dog and brings out a tinder side of the boy in an otherwise hardened life – your work puts me in the mind of these poems. I have a couple of suggestion and that is to make this poem into a one stanza poem – cut down on the amount of words – focus on one example of how the kitten inspired you - the below stanza, I think is the best: As a kitten I saw him stalk a kookaburra, twice his body weight. This predator bird could have killed him, with a peck or the more traditional method, carry him to a height and drop him. but instead played. I’d suggest beginning here and use this stanza as a foundation to build your poem around – I liked this poem and think you have something here however, it needs to be fleshed out a little more. Best, Randy

This is Brilliant

What a story! A true warrior cat! These lines made me smile:- Hear this! He sat be-sunning himself in the driveway. Alsation cat-killer came pounding up roaring. Chinese sat. To the last possible moment, and calmly took its nose off with one swipe. alsation fleeing screetching. Chinese sunning. I hope the alsation never tried to kill anything again having met it's match? LOL the image of a huge dog running for cover with the cat smirking in the sun really made me laugh! Thanks for sharing this Jess - it made my day! Kaz x It's impossible to smile on the outside without feeling better on the inside.

our childhood friends

how we miss them! I still have a poem floating around somewhere about my beloved dog dying (I was sixteen, we had had her since I was four), and only last year I laid another dog to rest, the one who saw the very last of my childhood and my first steps into adulthood. I still miss him, although I now own a very cute male beagle (stubborn as hell)...But somehow, I have outgrown the feeling of comfort a dog used to emanate for me. It has been replaced by a feeling of responsibility. Have I grown up at last? Gosh, look at what a rant you inspired there with your more than touching poem! Thanks for sharing, ID

Crtitique on Chinese

Hi Jess I enjoyed this narrative prose poem of yours. I like the unaffected way you describe your relationship with the guy. One gets the feeling that your love for him was (is) genuine and that there was a strong bond between you. Now let's see whether I can make a few remarks that may improve the poem. 1. Although everything in the poem is interesting, I do think that you may make it more potent by tightening up. Poetry is, after all, condensed literature. I don't mean hacking out huge sections. I mean reducing a little bit where you repeat certain things. For instance, you describe all the things Chinese hunted. You tabulate different snakes. You could cut down here and make the poem a little leaner. 2. The other main thing you may want to look at is line breaks. One breaks a line with a certain effect in mind, of course. You tend to have rather short lines in order to emphasize certain words: "a scar crossed fighter, Frankenstein cat!" Good and fine. But think about the narrative rhythm here. Would slightly longer lines not improve the flow of your story? 3. Question: "He grew unspeyed" Do you mean "unspayed"? Thanks for this poem. I had great fun reading it. Regards De Waal

Wow! thankyou for your thoughtful comments

I totally agree it could be tightened up. This is one of the few occasions I have written straight into NeoPoet without composing first. Not sure about cutting out the different snakes, there is a table of deadliness in Australian culture, perhaps that works more for Australians and needs to be more universal. "a scar crossed fighter," is an obvious reference to "star crossed lovers" and needs to stand alone. I totally agree it needs work in flow by shorter or longer lines and more careful rhythm choice. "Speyed" means castrated. It's why he grew so big and muscular, he wasn't speyed. Until later. Which was a tragedy. I always got the feeling he was highly resentful of what had been taken from him. It is a first draft. cheers, Jess “Are we having fun yet?” Zippy the Pinhead

Improving the poem

Hi Jess Glad you found some of my suggestions useful. I know what "spayed" means. In the dictionaries I checked it's spelled with an "a" not an "e". Maybe Down Under you do if differently? Regards

Well now,

That was an amusing yet touching poem. I found your cat charming. Shame he met his maker. The bit about the predator bird and the kitten playing together, that was terribly cute! I envy you those moments of happiness with a friend. ~Lex

And I cried reading it

it's only been three years this month that my Sunni was taken from me by medication that I administered to prevent fleas and ticks from making her ill....bitter irony. She was only five. Three cats now take her place. It took three to fill the hole she left in my life. Sweetly written, Jess. Best, Ronda

Hi Jess, Visiting Chinese’

Hi Jess, Visiting Chinese' grave today. Bokonon, a mystic/poet born in 1891 in Tabago, wrote: "Let your life be the poem you write." Some years ago... I took my daughter's cat as she was moving and unable to keep him. He was semi-outdoor and that year feline AIDS was rampant. He apparently got into a fight judging by a small scratch on his nose and soon was dying. I took him to the vets who asked if I wanted to be with him. I was crying like a baby, and said *no* although I could see him in the next room and hear his crying. My mother had died in my arms a few years earlier. Strange. I couldn't do it, then. It wasn't that I only had him for a month or so. ~A

Anna

I can understand your grief. Mine was Fred. A big dumb mutt crossbreed of border collie, german police and chow. My best friend, great football (american football) player. My oldest would run for passes and Fred would stay right with him and the minute the ball touched his hands he would cut between his legs and be on top of him licking his face when he hit the ground. He followed me everywhere, rode in the back of the truck. Gentle as a lamb and even had a cat for a pet (or vice versa). Her name was Tag-a-long. She slept on him, rode his back and was protected by him. Another dog could chase our cats, but if they so much as growled at Tag he went for the throat. Sorry for your loss. Fred accidently hung himself. I cried for weeks. Respectfully, Rett: "The only thing observable with the naked eye to exceed the speed of light is rumor" Unknown

Hi Rett, since then I have 2

Hi Rett, since then I have 2 cats buried in my backyard. The daughter that my daughter raised, "Izzy" who was not the birth mother, yet mother to her 4 other cats, and her real birth mother, who was called *cat* by the vets (as her real name was much like the sound of a kiss). My daughter has 2 of her 5 cats buried in her backyard now. My Italian Greyhound, Miles, is in a flower urn on my bedside table, Footkitty aka Mimi, was his best friend. She mourned for him for weeks and I think still looks under the covers now & then. O the stories I have of child and adulthood *pets*. When my children were small we had a house full of animals that lived together in peace. Always wondered why humans can't. On the death of any of our *furry friends* we always gather for a family *wake*. Feathered friends is another story. Love. ~A

It's rare to see such a sad side of you. I'm sorry about the circumstances to which it was unveiled. Know though, that my respect for you just increased tenfold. Losing a beloved animal is one of the hardest things to go through, I feel. Hopefully it will be another 10 or 11 years before I have to feel the pain with Jai. ~Jess K. ---------------------------------------------------- "If you've ever emptied the back of your pickup truck by driving backward really fast and slamming on the brakes, you might be a redneck" - Jeff Foxworthy Bill Engvall: "that's how we moved"
