REMEMBER WHEN

Remember, back when black people were friends Because we only had each other then Back when we wore buttterfly collar shirts Platform shoes and mini skirts Back when the press an curl was in And wearing big afros was the trend Back when Malcolm was necessary And necessary was Malcolm you know when everything was on layaway And layaway was on time Back when Motown was the sound and Stevie and Smokey were laying it down Back when we had hool-a-hoops and hopscotch And plenty of doubledutch on the block When black families were united And believed in black power and never tried to hide it Back when the street lights came on And that told you it was time to get home Back when all black people had soul Because that was something no one could control Oh how I wish those days would come back again So I composed this rhyme to take me back to then

Remember when

That was fantastic. We must have been in the same neighborhood together. It took me back to the 50's when kids were kids. Homemade toys and all, we played ball together. We took a nickel and it stretched between a couple of kids at the candy store. In our small town there may have been a couple of "hobo's" as we called them. Now they are called homeless. One or two junkies we had and we called them "Hypes". Now it's a epedemic. Glad you had the chance to see what lots of people now in their 60's saw then. I had a real good email taking us back some years. God bless ~ ladywriter

you touched

not only on Black culture here, but Americana as well. We have become so homogenized, gentrified, and generic and your poem sadly, longingly called out for when you could find real people right in your own neighborhood. The all capitals are a touch distracting, and I thought I saw maybe a couple of spelling typos, but the meaning of this is powerful and sincere. Mark
