Heart Beats

My heart beats hard
The never ending pulse
But I am barely listening
My head resting on your chest
I can hear your heart beat like a steady drum
Moving so fluently with your lungs

And the only thing keeping me alive
Is the air you breathe for me
I was the stranger in the dark
And you brought me back to life
But in this distorted world
We all fall into disillusionment
And dream of something so much more

You were my dreams at night
And the smile on my face in the morning
You had the most beautiful eyes
And you were the source of my nervous butterflies
And in this moment of unbelieving
Well I was the one worth leaving

Our fingers danced together
And in the moonlight our shadows made a show
But that was so long ago
And now I have finally decided
That my body is a prison
Keeping my heart from yours
The days are longer now than ever before
And the nights go on forever

It seems like someone has drained the color from your eyes
And filled it with something I don’t recognize
You broke my heart one time just to look inside
But I destroyed ours both and killed the love we had
And I have finally realized
That time takes love and gives it back

You were the poison that I craved
And the cure for all my pain
You were my dream away from sleep
And my shelter from the storm
And in this moment of unbelieving
Well I was the one worth leaving

Wow...

This poem is awesome!! Passion, thankfulness, guiltiness, sorrow, trust and broken trust. Although I don’t read them in the poem, they are there, you are very talented poet. Your descriptions are very good. “You were the poison that I craved / And the cure for all my pain” I love this paradox that you created. And I love how you wrote about your point of view of the relationship without self-centred the poem in you. Thanks for sharing this poem, keep up the great writing!

Yes!

Here I am thinking about my first love and how it was as you write, my dreams at night smiling face nervous butterflies and the poison that took so long to work I thought I was going to die when I realized I should have allowed that poison to move on through me, allowed myself to feel the pain and when I finally did accept the why the poison turned out to be the tears on my face and when there were no more I was free to love once again (only a little smarter this time) ;-)Outstanding writing here Wash... Thanks for bringing me back to the good and bad and good, Mark

Incredible

This poem has me entranced. Beautifully written and the imagery is incredible. It 'took me there' and I felt what you were saying every step of the way. Wow!
