One Can Only Laugh

Gorillas in the wild, despite the token news seen good, near their inevitable extinction.

One can only laugh.

By my last count, at least half a million U.S. people die directly from omnipresent cigarette consumption (and its ubiquitous air-polluting smoke) yearly.

One can only laugh.

And the behavior’s kept legal.

One can only laugh.

That doesn’t take into account the fatal fires so caused by such acts universal in smokers’ homes … and in our fields and forests.

One can only laugh.

Cigarettes remain quite legal even while government’s too costly obsession with less harmful marijuana proceeds apace and unabated.

One can only laugh.

We live for our addictions.

One can only laugh.

Including that of accumulating an obscene amount of wealth.

One can only laugh.

Farmers and megacorporations saturate our so-called foods with durable poisons while yet in ground—till those same neurotoxins/hormone adulterants become a permanent part of every one of us.

One can only laugh.

We serve at their meal our sadly discouraged chickens bits and pieces of themselves and other sadly discouraged chickens.

One can only laugh.

We get fatter every day.

One can only laugh.

A planeload weighs more every day.

One can only laugh.

Northwest’s planes do not fly … except for when they’re late.

One can only laugh.

We burn up regular/plus/premium as if there’s no tomorrow.

One can only laugh.

We say we care about our children even when we don't.

One can only laugh.

Since acts of smoking scrap more children’s health and lives than anything else we may do (or not), we ought concern ourselves enough to respond effectively.

One can only laugh.

And of course we don’t.

One can only laugh.

The president starts and fights a war he did not/cannot justify or win.

One can only laugh.

Katrina’s fallouts persist.

One can only laugh.

We burn our foreign bridges while terrorists grow stronger.

One can only laugh.

Our misnamed healthcare megasystem lies hopelessly charred and broken.

One can only laugh.

We soon die without those prescription drugs we think we need, and that because they’re too costly.

One can only laugh.

We soon die when we take those very same drugs … because they’re too damned deadly.

One can only laugh.

A competent, uncorrupted FDA, like WMD in martyred Iraq, is lost and can’t anywhere be found.

One can only laugh.

Responsible government is an oxymoron.

One can only laugh.

Outside the realms of common human fault and foible, while we live we’re not noticed.

One can only laugh.

If by the oddest chance we are when we die, we’ll soon be forgot.

One can only laugh.

No matter what we do, we are marked for death.

One can only laugh.

I’d say more, but I laugh already too hard for my heart’s well-being as is.

One can only laugh …

Or cry.

Fucking brilliant!

I have this odd sense that I have been waiting for this particular poem from you, Chuck. I salute you and your poetic honesty and brilliance. This is only the second time on this site I have said this is truly a poem that needed to be written (the other was one by poet_inside and I won't name it, in order to encourage others to read her work) Love you man, for your poetic quality, integrity and truth, perhaps us mere poets can make a difference. cheers, Jess

Awesome

I seem to be using this word a lot of late but this is absolutely brilliant work! Living in England I can relate to the message and the politics on many levels and you tell it so very very well! An honest piece that hits ya right between the eyes - love it - cheers - Kaz x

I

think the poem has much to say, and its worth saying, but the "one can only laugh' refrain becomes distracting and ultimately for me, detracted from the message you offered. Maybe look at reforming it without the refrain and see how it looks, just an idea.

Actually ... Well, No

No. 1: I acknowledge this write's a deviation from any of my normal styles. No. 2: I think the dirgy refrain is what gives it the power it holds. No. 3: It must be read slowly, chewed thoughtfully, with allowance made---by the reader---for the reader's feelings to attain their proper shapes. No. 4: Naturally, it could have been a Bible's length ... but as indicated in the piece, laughing so much and so hard can be wearing to cheek and stomach/rib muscles. One needs to take a break now and then. It seemed about time for it. No. 5: The repetitive lament/refrain turns what would've been a prosy essay or editorial into what looked/felt like a poem. No. 6: Anyway, there she is. Don't think there's much possible to do to improve on it. No. 7: So I'm voting to leave it as is, thank you very much. Regards, Chuck

And

of course, you are welcome to leave it just as it is, I was only offering another perspective for you to consider. I hope you take no offense, for non was intended. Scout

I'm protective of my work, but I appreciate your perspective and don't want to discourage you from future comment critical or otherwise. Thanx. Chuck

I am

trying to follow my own advice and comment before I read any other comments on this. Every single point you make is articulate and true. I think this is more dissertation than poem, as about three stanzas in the flow gives way, despite the use of repetition. If it were me (and this is just me, not a detriment to your work) I would maybe break up the repetition every now and again. Still come back to it, but maybe occasionally break away in mid stanza. I do think you might want to mention all the crap we dump into our water as well. With you living in Detroit and me on the shore of mega polluted lake Erie it's frightening to know that even the fish (which are supposed to be ultra healthy for me) aren't safe. Mark
