Paradoxical Love

As parents, the hardest thing for us to  understand

Is that our children are not our children

However tight we hold their hands

We may love them and feed them

And teach them certain ways

But we can never own them

They’re only ours to raise

So a parent’s love is paradoxical

The very love we give

Is the love that they grow up with

And take out into the world to live

so why do we punish ourselves

When it’s time for them to let go

When we should be praising ourselves

For the independent people we helped to grow

simple and inately true

isn't is strange that something so true is not immediately obvious to everyone all the time? But then that could be said of so many truths. Even not having kids of my own, as an uncle I trepidate and worry about their steps to independence, even feel hurt when they don't match my own values and aspirations. (not that I really wish being a poet on anyone! 8) Thank you for this. cheers, Jess

paradoxical indeed

an amazing gift it is, isn't it? The ability to create these wonderful little things that stay in our stead throughout their lives, yet have that same independance we had... even at a young age! Your poem i sincere, humble, and true. Mark W.
