A One, A Two

1) It's all play. 2) I rely on personal backgrounds in phonetics, hand and machine shorthand, word (and parts of words) sensitivities, and combinations of some or all of the above (for one example, portmanteaus)... There's also a bit of Latin ... sometimes Spanish, Greek, German, French, along with a host of other potentialities. Those coupled with a lifetime's worth of fun and games with language entitle me to play. Lewis Carroll wasn't the only one who could indulge in such as these. They're fun. And it's OK when the reader doesn't get it. Getting it isn't the point. Just play! play! play! I say! say! say! With my loudest Hurray! hurray! Regards, Chuckles PS: Don't know for sure, but I suspect (at least for some readers) pieces such as these are an acquired taste. I could also argue that they're merely an updated form of IQ test. But then people would just be insulted.

Ok Chuck, that's pretty much what I figured

but for me it won't be an acquired taste, I don't like cryptic crosswords or working out puzzles of any form. I can when I set my mind to it. But even though I suspect I would find it rewarding in your case, it's not a game I enjoy. I'm not saying I like it simple, or spoon fed, just these particular forms of cryptology are not things I enjoy. Saying that I still enjoy the sound of the words and the vague sense of meaning, my 4's are honest. Just me, cheers, Jess

Hey, now, Jess!

That's just my point in my comment above. These are not written to decipher. They're written to enjoy ... and for fun. As soon as you try to puzzle it out, you make work of it. And honestly, where is the fun in work? Unless you spell it wofunrk? Your "the sounds and vague sense of meaning" gets close to the heart of it for a true appreciator. There is no intent to mislead or puzzle or confuse or dismay. In other words, these pieces are not meant for crossword puzzle fans or cryptographers. As Archibald MacLeish, a two-time Pulitzer prizewinner in poetry (and a poet guilty as sin of playful nonsense versing himself), once said, in his piece Ars Poetica: "A poem should not mean / But be." And check out Lewis Carroll's Jabberwocky. Why would you want to ferret out the meaning of it? Just enjoy her as she be. Regards, Chuck PS: I persist in believing that if you drop some critical preconceptions, you just might---just might!---acquire a taste for this. Believe me ... there is absolutely nothing unhealthy about it. (I know, I know. That word unhealthy throws up a red flag for Spanish bulls, too.)
