Freddy Flappy Ears
In a little village just outside the big town lived a little boy called Freddie Flappy ears. Freddie was very lonely because he had no friends. He would stay at home and play in the garden on his own because no one would want to call round for him. Things were not much better when he went to school. All the boys and girls at school would laugh at Freddy’s rather strange but large ears and this made Freddie aware and very sad. One day Freddie went home from school crying his little eyes out. What’s wrong my darling said Freddy’s mother. All the children are laughing at me because of my ears. Don’t worry my darling, you are my little darling, and you are just a perfect little boy so just ignore them. They are all very silly children and you should feel sorry for them for being silly and not accepting you. The one thing Freddie they all look the same and you are special and some day they will find that out.
This made Freddie feel much better. He had his supper and his mum read him a bed time story and off he went to sleep. The next day was exactly the same as the day before.
The mean little children just kept on laughing at Freddie. The children would leave Freddie standing in the corner of the playground crying and all alone.
That night Freddie decided to try and do something about his rather large ears.
He went into daddy’s drawer where all the important things were kept and took out two envelopes. He sneaked back up to his bedroom and fell fast asleep. The next morning when he awoke early he had his breakfast; he sneaked into the toilet and neatly folded each ear up and put them in the envelopes. With the gum on the flap, he stuck them to the side of his head. He left before mummy had seen him and set off for school. He noticed that everybody he passed looked at him funny and some of the adults were actually laughing at him. You see Freddie had forgotten about the envelopes, I wonder why they are looking at me in such a strange way. But he paid no attention to them. When he got to school, all the children standing near the school gates chatting before school. And you can imagine there surprise when they saw Freddie, they went into fits of hysterical laughter. In fact some of the children had tears streaming down there face were rolling on the ground they found it so funny. Poor Freddie, he felt a thousand times worse than he ever felt in his life. When Mr. Thompkins, spotted him you see he was Freddy’s teacher. Poor Freddie was crying his eyes out. Come with me he said to Freddie as Mr. Thompkins put his arm around Freddy’s shoulders. Mr. Thompkins took Freddie in to the teacher’s staff room and took the envelopes off Freddy’s ears. Never mind he said sympathetically, the other children are just being foolish. Just because someone is different from them they don’t understand. Just ignore them he said. That day Freddie felt a little better. Freddie as able to ignore the sniggers and comments made by the children. Mr. Thompkins had scolded the other children for being so cruel and made them stay back after school to do extra lessons. But Freddie felt they were still laughing at him but he did not care. The next day Freddie went to school as normal. It was the art lesson with Mrs. Bryant. Her class was at the top of the building and when you looked out the window it was very high up. At ten o’clock the fire alarm sounded. The teacher got all the children into a neat line and started to lead then to the stairs. But when they got to the stairs there was black smoke creeping up them, so the teacher led them back to the classroom. There appeared to be no way out. Just then the children heard the fire truck pull into the school with its bells ringing very loud. Don’t worry said Mrs. Bryant the fireman will get us out? Mrs. Bryant opened the window and shouted for help. The fireman spotted the children up on the top floor and began to raise the big ladder on the back of the fire engine. All of a sudden it stopped and wouldn’t go up any further. What shall we do said the chief fireman that’s as far as our ladder goes up. I do not know he said by this time the fire was creeping up the stair case. We haven’t got time to send to town to get another engine. Just then Freddie had a brilliant idea he wiggled his ears and lo and behold he
started to rise of the ground the harder he flapped the higher he went. Freddie stepped forward and said to the teacher I think I can get the children down he said. This is not the time for foolishness said Mrs. Bryant. Its not foolish said Freddie he showed the teacher what he could do and the teacher was amazed.
Freddie told Mrs. Bryant his plan. Now children one by one I want you to get on Freddie’s back one by one and he will take you down. The children looked at him confused but they were so scared the first child climbed on. Up to the window he went and before the teacher could stop him, he jumped and started to flap his ears. All of a sudden as if by magic, he started to fly and flew all the way down to the ground. The firemen and the crowd just looked on in astonishment. They had never seen anything like this in there lives a flying boy. Then he returned and one by one he took the other children down. When it was the teachers turn, Freddie got worried. I don’t I can carry the weight of Mrs. Bryant the fireman suggested Freddie take a rope ladder to the teacher. Up he went again with the rope ladder by this time Freddie was almost exhausted it took all his strength for one last flight up he went and gave the rope ladder to the teacher. She tied the rope to the radiator and down she climbed to the second floor. The fireman ladder could reach; he put Mrs. Bryant across his broad shoulders and carried her safe to the ground. By that time they had called another engine from town the fire man had nothing to do but put the fire out. Everybody was safe and sound, Freddie had saved the day. After what the children had seen they all felt ashamed the way they had treated. Freddie had saved them all; a very important lesson was learned by the children. If someone looks different on the outside it does not mean they are not the same on the inside.
Freddie became a national hero after that, he appeared in all the newspapers and on television. And from that date Freddie was the most popular child in the town everyone knew his name and people would stop him in the street just to shake his hand.
