Just Shoot Me Nicky

I’m old now and nearly going blind.

Little to late to be kind.

My floppy ears, are moth eaten, and rough.

You could say about life, I’ve just about had enough.

My coat is ragged and full of fleas.

To old to chase other dogs, that bite and tease.

Paws are worn, not like I can buy a new pair of shoes.

I get confused so easy, and sometimes I need clues.

Tail is scraggy and not much hair.

No good for wagging, its really un fair.

Walking for me, is now painfully slow.

I’m not really sure which way to go.

But I really do love, my master so.

When he throws a stick, its to far for me to go.

So what could be the answer to my plight.

When my hearing is going and Im losing my sight.

If its hard for you, just open the door and set me free.

I really quite sorry, on your new rug I done a pee.

Its ever so difficult for me you see.

So lets not make bones about it, why don’t you just shoot me..

One of the reasons I love and hate you

is that I never know how to take your work. You are far the most versatile poet on this site and you present works of great dignity and insight and others that I find utterly worthless. You confuse me. I like that. If one is certain, one is wrong. This one hits me hard and is good and true. I had to kill a cat, not just a cat, one of my best friends ever, when he was dieing of cancer. He asked me to and I did. I held him while the fatal poison took effect. I felt his heart stop. That is something I am not sure I could ever write a poem about. I also felt anger at the people who let their pets suffer old age and pain indignities because they don't have the compassion or courage to end them. That truly shits me to tears. You take responsibility for an animal you are taking full responibility. Don't shirk it! Wow man. this poem moved me heaps and I may have missed an allegory, but ok you rouse my passions. that must be good poetry cheers Jess
