For Jess and Joe and Kim, Real Poetry

You will be happy to know
I found real poetry
while travelling east
on the Valleyview bridge.
Real poetry is found
in the moshpits of America,
it is there, Kim
in breath,
in first breath,
awake.

Yes Joe,
real poetry
it is in sex.
But only the chase,
not the during or after.
The chase is the religious part,
everything else is amusement.
This morning,
I found real poetry
in high cirrus clouds
that seemed barely 100 feet over
Cleveland’s Terminal Tower,
like some Margeret Bourke White photograph.
Oh Jess, if you could see it,
the city that I bitch about yet love,
if you could see the strong oaks of the metroparks
you would know there is life here
there is
real poetry
not in pain,
does pain breed art?
Shitty art, maybe.
Real poetry is bred
from life.
It grows in the gut,
not the classrooms or laboratories.
It grows and evolves
and is alive,
yes alive,
in the pit of the stomach.
Breathe it in, Pirate,
live it boy.
I found real poetry today
in the way I saw
a highway overpass
going east on I 480.
Lo! The sun is gold!
Brilliant, maginficent gold
and amber a mile ahead!
I wanted to look straight into the heart of it
and be wonderfully blind
for I would see nothing so beautiful
with my two eyes again.
I saw real life poetry.
It is in faces,
real faces,
ugly and otherwise.
In dirty fingernails I found it,
in bent backs and tired eyes I saw it,
not in young love,
for the young only love themselves
and selfishly,
their parents.
No, I saw real poetry
again I saw it
and smiled, sadly.
For all things are temporary.

of course

I was doing the speed limit, hell I was already late, and they knew it, so for once I was like "well, I'm already late, might as well enjoy the ride."

Heartfelt and powerful

Have to take my hat off here--this is the kind of poem Bukowski himself might envy. You've got some incredible experiential truths written very plainly, but all the powerful for that, here: "not in young love/for the young only love themselves and selfishly/their parents/No, I saw real poetry again I saw it and smiled, sadly/For all things are temporary..." THAT is breaking. Not everyone can disinherit poetic logic and have their talent shine successfully: you can. Congratulations.

What the HELL is going on?

why does my poem say it is updated? Why am I hearing that comments were deleted? I went to a Cleveland Indians game tonight, and come home to find my inbox full of cryptic emails that I can't reply to...WTF?!

your poem was not updated

a comment was removed and I don't blame Kim. Maybe all could have a little forum about the values of political correctness, or, to use another term for the same thing, respect. The one little word that made Joes comment offensive was "had". It makes a huge difference. cheers, Jess

Excuse me...

I don't know who reviewed this poem with my name but it was not me. So whatever comment supposedly written by me and removed has everyone up in arms hear this. . .if I don't like a poem I will say so in a CONSTRUCTIVE MANNER. I do not tear poets apart. Now, I may not agree with someone elses review but I would never write something abusive. That being said, here is THE REAL review. . . THIS was a poetic masterpiece! There I feel better now. K. I don't think there was a "Mystery comment"

I've taken a look at the logs, I can't find anything-- If anybody has something they'd like to suggest I take a look at, please private message me and I'll take a look. This site is pretty robust - even if it were "hacked", we'd still have access logs of the attempt stored elsewhere. And those logs show nothing out of the ordinary. On the human side of this-- from what I can gather, Joe is the only one who said he spotted this. Joe is a great guy, a very active member here, and a good friend. I'm not going to say anything about him except for one thing - just take a look at the events of last night as a whole. Take a look at things in context. Andrew
