In The Fashion Of

Discarded, and without even the merest hint of a thought

Goes the cigarette aimlessly rolling towards

The gutter to join the weeks old litter abandoned

In the same manner as their new lodger

The lipstick smudged cigarette.

Once it had proudly protruded

From the red painted lips of a sensual lady

On her way to another day in the office

It had felt so wanted, so secure

In between the tight grip of her sensual lips.

Alas, the cigarettes life is a short one

Once it is plucked from the packet it knows death is just a few breaths away

As soon as the match strikes the box

the cigarette knows it has had its day

Tobacco to ash to a filter tip in the gutter.

Hi Lenny of Cohen and welcome to neopoet

and OK! I get it already! you like leonard cohen. But to name yourself after him? mmm... I loved this poem. Its deceptively simple but highly evocative imagery and with meaning to boot! I have been a cigarette, and have smoked a few. Even kinda sexy in a sordid sort of way. Your hero would be proud of you. cheers, Jess

welcome as well.

I once wanted to write a poem about a mussel that had accidentally fallen out of a saute pan and landed under the stove it was being cooked on, about it's last dying hours under that stove. Thanks for completing it for me, lol.
