Fun with John Milton

The mind is its own place,

and in itself

Can make a Heav’n of Hell,

a Hell of Heav’n—

And provides but fertile soil

for the local Rever’n’

His/her weeds to plant

sev’n times sev’nty-sev’n.

By Way of Explanation ...

The last-line reference here is to number of weeds planted---i.e., seven times seventy-seven. Seven seems to be a favored biblical number. For instance, there are seven days in a week, etc. Regards, Chuckles

ta

but do you think your poetry should need explanation? I appreciate cleverness and references but obscurity can be annoying, cheers, Jess

It Was for You I Explained

To be excruciatingly honest, I'm surprised this one would warrant explanation. But then I can't get directly into the mind of the reader; I can write only to what my expectations of the reader are. There are going to be times in the life of any author where misjudgment is made in such regard. I don't get the obscurity. I thought it quite clear. In fact, I'm at a loss as to how I could have imbued it with more clarity while hewing to the piece's simplicity. And its honesty. Yours again, Chuck
