my word of holy caution

my
word
of
holy
caution

think of God's advance in years, I say,
when setting down yourself to pray;

that p’raps He’s turned life’s page
and come hard to hear in His old age.

oh, heed my cautionary word:

though you may think the thought absurd,
there may be more than hell to pay.

there’s risk in mumbled, unclear prayer
that finds God's ears but poorly heard …
by God or any passing bat or bird.

when those words you choose---hey-hey!---
are wrongly heard by God at night or day,

oh, heed my cautionary word;

though you may think the thought absurd,
there may be more than hell to pay.

Wow!

I don't know how you could so misunderstand this piece!

to explain it ...

... would be like explaining a joke--"This one was funny because ..."--and would ruin the fun in the funny. I don't want to spoil it for you. Thanx, though, for asking.

Hahaha..got it.

I started coming through back posts of yours. Good piece. Not naming names..but sometimes you just need to take a lighter approach to life. There is a time and a place to be serious, and a time and place to be humorous AND serious at the same time. Loved it! -David Work, stretch, take risks, visualize your future. Become the poet you have always longed to be. All that is needed is honest effort.-DSB

It Is Difficult

to justify a congratulations to you when so many do get it---and immediately. I ought, though, to congratulate Joe. He stands pretty much alone at not getting it. Glad you liked it. Thanx. ---Chuck

From a profoundly committed spiritual atheist

I dug this! Funny and so true. The power of prayer is based in the magic of language, naming, just as poetry is. Love the mix of archaic style, modern idiom and comedic poetic form (elements of Ogden Nash). Hope I have not mis-understood it as badly as Joe! cheers

You Got It Just Fine!

the spoof is evident; why doesn't Joe get it? he has my congratulations, though: I've had people read this by the throng. he's the only one to uniquely get it so uniquely--- and fundamentally---wrong. PS - Ogden Nash is, indeed, my favorite nonsense versifier; he lights my comedic house afire. thanx

I like this, too. The older

I like this, too. The older I got, the more attention I devoted to trying to come up with a "safe" prayer, until I finally decided on "Give me the patience and strength to endure whatever You decide." I was directed to your site by another member and have enjoyed your humor.
