Breach of Faith

Our dogs love to sun themselves on our patio, out back.
I envy the bliss on their faces. The sun chasing away
any concerns they may have. We leave the door ajar
so they can return at their leisure.

Occasionally, the wind, or our absentmindedness
closes the door, creating a conspiracy of betrayal.
Tilted heads and quizzical looks through the windows confirm this.

As if to say, "Why would you do this?"
We respond with a treat in hopes of their forgiveness,
which is always accepted for our terrible transgression.
