Sensory Deprivation

If I just close my eyes,
If I just cover my ears,
If I stop going outside,
Will it erase the fears?

If I can’t see the blood,
That stains my hands…
Is it only warm water?
If we all just pretend?

If the meat was for cheap,
Would you eat your friend?
Betrayal of your humanity,
For a few dollars to spend.

Would you close all your blinds?
You’ll act as if nothing is wrong?

Will you keep your ears covered?
Would you muffle their screams?
Would you ignore all the agony,
Only to stay trapped in dreams?

Would you dig your mom’s grave?
Would you pave your love’s tomb?
Will you use the ashes of children,
For the flowers to take their bloom?

About me

I’m from Texas, I’m 17 years old, and I write for fun.

My preferred styles of poetry: free verse and acrostic poetry.

Favorite literary tool: alliteration, vivid imagery, and repetition.

My favorite poem: “First They Came”- Martin Niemöller

Things that inspire me to write: sociopolitical issues, personal reflection, and speculative curiosities beyond my understanding.

My poetic journey: I began writing poetry late last year. I was hesitant to embrace it. Having preconceived notions that it was sappy and boring.

However, I really bloomed when I started to develop my own style and branched out for restrictive rhyme schemes.

I found it very freeing and a great tool to process my past. As well as a way to make statements about the state of the world.

I want to continue to expand my understanding of poetry with an open mind. Not adhering to any specific brand of writing.
