IF FLOWERS STILL BLOOM IN BEIRUT

A chill cuts through my valley,

There’s whispers on the wind,

The air is rife with rumours:

Tonight more boys are coming in!

Silently, in pairs or single:

Some are men, some hardly boys.

Some, with money in their pockets,

Some, with bullets in their toys.

Too young to understand their orders,

But the children living there

Know Death comes across the borders:

Fear hangs heavy in the air…

Now, from every post and steeple:

Incendiary rhymes;

MASK

I hope that you will understand:

I have no need to win her heart-

I just have years of need to know,

Did she understand the part

Of me she saw so many years ago,

One April night, when time stood still?

She'd looked into an emptiness

That only you have filled…

Embarrassed by old memories,

I search for shreds of dignity,

Some token that says she had seen

And recognised that it had been

An involuntary cry, whose cause

ORPHANELL ON A RAINY DAY

Orphanell, on a rainy day,

On an afternoon in June-

Though you wish your man would stay

You know that’s crying for the moon-

But, through your silent teacup storms,

Through lonely days like these,

Oh, Orphanell, I share your stormy seas…

Orphanell, you have a friend:

You have a saving grace-

Through afternoons without an end,

In such a lonely place-

Because, one rainy afternoon,

Beneath dark loaded skies,

Did you unload the sadness in your eyes.

APPLEWEED

PART I: GARDEN IN THE SKY

Exploding supernova in a Western sky:

Mystic dark portent, or the evil eye?

Seems every hour another star in our galaxy dies:

Tell me, where did all the Appleweed take root

In our garden in the sky?

Like faceless marionettes in some grotesque display,

Contorted caricatures from some frightening play;

Sometimes, it seems that all our dreams of Passion’s endless spark

Are lost in green, or torn in twain, we take

Small solace in the dark…

CONFLUENCE

So we’re told, by those who hold
The view, that earthly strings
Will overpower the pull of love
On all celestial things-
But, by some paradox, around the equinox,
No power in the stars
Could prevent the confluence
Of Mercury, Uranus and Mars.

For Mercury, of fire born-
Quicksilver, much maligned-
Uranus, so distant,
Was the last to be aligned-
Now, in Mars, this triad of stars
Has found its human face:
The pull of love, that once seemed faint,
Has drawn them to this place…

As Jupiter and Venus watched

FAREWELL TO JUNE, FAREWELL IN MARCH

The Colonel’s gone:
There’s an old lady all alone
And so forlorn;
Suddenly, with him not there
She’s past her prime:
Out of tune and out of breath
And out of time…

And her days drag on and on…
And her nights are, oh, so long…
She remembers days in ‘Doon:
Stairwells and starch,
Farewells in March,
Farewell to June!

A lonely song:
She’d always said she would go first,
But now he’s gone
Leaving memories of days of broken trust,
As her house turns to decay
And flesh to dust,

Untitled

Expressionless, she knew how to remain stoic all too well. The child sat there staring at her feet or the shoes that her feet hid in rather. Her face blank, partially hidden by long, thick corkscrew twists. She observes everything that is around her except what lay in front of her for that to her was already expected. A scene that had wound and rewound itself in her mind but never got stretched or tired from overplay. It was an already seen, a deja' vu that subconsciously she had anticipated.

"I"

I do my best in school,

I have a dog,

I don't try to be cool,

But I still end up in the fog.

Sometimes my emotions don't make since,

I come home to a bunch of nonsince.

I try to help out a bit

But I don't have the time,

I try to do my school work,

I try to stay in line.

I don't want my life to be a waste,

every day I try to pick up the pace.

I try hard to make life better,

But it seems sometimes that it gets trown back in my face.

Iknow I'm appreciated,

but sometimes I wonder.

THE WONDER WHEEL

The Wonder Wheel
by M Vinning

The Wonder Wheel Spins On
Destination Ignorance
Blindly on to a car crash
to a Broken Heart
to an Untimely Death

The Wonder Wheel Spins On
Destination Hope
Kindly on to Love
to Belonging
to Life
