The Loner

Large and lofty bookshelves lined the lower wall
Sitting, lonely, was a man in whom did lay
Hopes of knowing that there'd come a better day—
He was searching olden tomes to calm his soul.

"Dear, may I..." the phrase was uttered, sounding forth—
Echoes spread around him, breaking focused thought,
Ending peace, the rest he had before then bought—
Dreams of southern lands, thus bringing him back north.

If I Had Turned Around

Rewriting Memories

If I had turned around that night and went home
I believe I would have ended up dead
The guilt I held never left me alone
Filling my head with never ending dread

If I had turned around that night and gone back
Within days we would have been at square one
But I would have sunk deeper into the black
Into that cold darkness that weighed a ton

Teton Morning Fire

They rise in Wyoming
but share their beauty with Idaho.
The mountains speak our language.
Granite doesn't care about borders,
shadows don't stop at the state line,
and their spirit belongs to
both sides of the divide.

The Tetons stand like a statement,
all jagged truth and cold honesty.
Their peaks cut from the same tough stone
that built the lava plains
and the Salmon River canyons that shadow
our small towns and appreciative souls.

Servant to the Bogeyman

Creatures and ghouls far and wide
Hear me now from the other side

Trust your luck to the old and wise
They should have drained your blood before you died

Now you’re scratching, scratching, hollow cry
No one to hear you
Loved ones had said goodbye

Being buried alive is not much fun
It could happen to the best of us
Even a nun

Die your last breath while you weep
Dying will be easy; just fall asleep

Your ghost will rise to hunt the land
You’re now a servant to the Bogeyman!

Father and Son

“I have a good mind”
No, you don’t.
You bully, harass, and intimidate
But never with a sound mind.
You never have.

“Why do you just sit there?”
Though I sit,
My mind is tearing
across the universe,
To view its wonders.

“You’ll never learn”
You never teach,
Nor demonstrate clearly,
What you want is out of reach
And my interest.

Beautiful Nothingness

The unwelcomed visitor, the dawn light,
victim of the morning, raped of the night.
I loathe the harsh friction of breath in my chest,
the labour of being, the failure of rest.
I am tired of the life, the pulse, the heat,
the rhythmic thrum of a heart's defeat.
Reality is a knife thrust through my mind,
a cruel architecture, serrated, unkind.
But beneath the heavy velvet of my eyes,
a shimmering, lawless empire lies.
Let the sun burn to ash; let this world decay,
for I have a world hidden away.

8 AM Train Ride to Joy

Sadness
Is sitting
On the couch
As the sun
Starts to wake

I haven’t
Shut my eyes
Since darkness
Played Simon Says

Time moves
Way below
The speed limit

Joy is typing
A message
Still, she never
Presses send

Yesterday
Pressed play
On a movie
About mistakes
The actor is me

I’d fast-forward
To today

Hope sits
Next to me
Saying this is just
Traffic
On the freeway

anthropomorphization and personification considered flattery

for all creatures great and small
wise and wonderful
which harmless trailing appellations
courtesy anointed survival of the fittest
places Homo sapiens,
sapiens on the highest rung of a pedestal,
where said arrogant species and genus
supposedly self decreed supremacy
self serving as thee bonafide
electric kool and the gang
deoxyribonucleic acid aid test,
and figurative benchmark
against which other animals
and plants arbitrarily
evaluated as guinea bay of pigs,
whereby gifted intelligence

This Time, I Notice Everything

(Rewriting Memories)

I’ve been going through my old poetry
Remembering the things I left behind
And for some faults I rewrite a memory
As if atoning for my sins and crimes

I’ve been thinking about my penance
The anger that used to flow through my veins
The words we spat were poisonous venom –
Furious – while I wrapped myself in chains

But now, this time, I notice everything
Understanding ourselves a little more
I was dying from all the coloring
Trying to cover the holes in my core

Sand storm

We are at the top of the food chain.
The superiority of our species remains our favorite concept.
We are content,
Our homeostasis is fully satisfied.
All that’s left for us to do is watch,
From the top of the sand mountain,
With our eyes closed and our reflexes gone.

Moon Kissed,
Happy that I’m still here,
In the darkness,
Not on shifting sands,
At the top of the world.
