The Sound That Only Silence Makes
The Sound That Only Silence Makes
When the silence of the night rests on my shoulders, disquieting thoughts come alive
Fears that plague my waking hours are given a chance to thrive.
As the sun goes down and the day shifts its mood, my body does not feel the calm
Anxiety chases the remains of the day and sounds its weary alarm.
The quiet isn’t gentle, it roars to a deafening pitch
As shadows gather round my bed, anxiety flips a switch.
The stillness is too heavy as loneliness clings to my bones.
My soul cries out for relief each night as the child within me groans.
I secure my house, I lock the door, I shut the windows tight.
I place a chair at my bedroom door and brace myself for the night.
I get in bed, snuggle down, pink plushy in my arm,
I scroll to find a movie in the hopes it will make me feel calm
But when it ends, and all goes quiet, I still have to sit with that sound.
The one that only silence makes when comfort can’t be found…
