Don't Ask Me Who I Am
Who am I? Who are you to ask?
Look beyond the present - it’s here cos there’s a past.
Thirty years previous, this man was just a boy
With the world at his feet, but far beyond his reach.
His little arms grew and the world did too
I’ve walked a thousand miles in different shoes
Down pivotal paths and risky routes
Met a host of folk in passing, heard words I hope weren’t lasting.
Picking up on every vibe, whilst homing in on one
Pretending to be busy on their phones and never done
I wonder why they smile once they disregard what’s said
They ask how someone is and then erase it from their head
Overloaded senses - when sensations are relentless
But avoiding all, the big and small, renders life eventless
Read the rest of the poem Show less
I’m defenceless, but not yet unyielding
The best defence is not to shield them
So, I make a plan and then attack it
With success in sight, the future’s bright and I’ll crack it
The worlds still at my feet, and I’m on the brink to grab it
Well-grounded in fact, yes, I like the sound of it
It works and I’ve expounded it, digression is unfounded
I’m a human like us all, and like us all I am unique
Life changes like the weather’s many troughs and peaks
Does it matter who we are, or are what matters feelings?
Don’t ask me who I am, ask me how I am, and mean it.

"That reads ‘turn back, threats ahead The gym’s there, go before bed!’ I think you could improve on those lines, which seem rather rhyme-led, but the rest is very good. Sound advice too." -

"I so agree with Lavender. This is really clever! I'm not sure if the flickering in the ending rhymes is intentional, still as I said a very amusing read. Thank you for sharing." -

About Me
An enigma to all, over six foot tall. Finding my way through life's maze with a pen in my hand and a spring in my step.
