The Unexpected Gift
This unexpected gift
Presented to me post-surgery
Laid out on the antiseptic white linen sheet
Atop your hospital bed
Wheeled in by your nurse
Wearing her butterfly scrubs
You glanced up
Gazing through the heavy mist
Of dissipating anesthesia
Rising off you
Like fog lifting on this summer morning
Your eyes are tight
Holding the discomfort
Of your face clenched with tension
Read the rest of the poem Show less
Working to hold back the eruptions
Bubbling up just below the surface
Through this you grace me
With the pain and comfort
Of these companions
Sitting side by side with us
I see you and sense
An opening of those sacred vessels
Uncaging your divine spark
And letting it burst out
It rushes toward me
There is a loud silent sound
Reaching me
As your grip penetrates
Without a touch
I feel an unshackling
And hear the creaking
Of an old rust-covered door
Opening with some resistance
As the twinkling of your spark
With the focus of a laser
Burns through the hinges
And reaches inside
Joining us
The words
In sickness and health
Flash like a vision
As the divine sparks
Connect us, unexpectedly
It is a gift, the most favorite gift
You have given me
