I Wanna Love You
I want to love you in a way that makes your past demons flea your soul.
I want to love you past the limits of yours and my control.
I want to intertwine our spirits like braids
Interlock our souls like dreads.
As this love embarks on a righteous journey.
Out of body experience
I stand beside myself as I watch you turn me.
Turn me into a better version of the man you initially accepted.
I became exceptional because of your acceptance.
I found you because of my humility and deference.
Deference to God’s plan.
Followed the ordered steps
To be the right man.
The right provider, protector, and gentleman.
It takes a gentle man to provide stability in the workplace and exercise a little empathy at home.
Because a protector protects the heart from more than just outside force.
Protection of course,
is protection from a man’s inconsistency.
A man shouldn’t be near you,
And love you distantly.
Trust ain’t earned instantly,
It’s done persistently.
I want to love you.
Most of all,
I want you to know I do.
Thank you for letting me.
Your trust in me is what strengthens me.
Loving you made me stronger,
And I’ll probably live longer
because you gave me a reason.
It’s our season,
For love to grow,
For us to know,
What loving each other will make us do
It just feels good knowing,
You wanna love me,
And I wanna love you.

The below is a computer-generated response from Neo, Neopoet’s AI:
The poem builds its argument through repetition of "I want to love you," a refrain that anchors the piece and gives it forward momentum. That anaphora is one of the poem's real strengths: each return to the phrase raises the stakes slightly, and by the closing lines the refrain has shifted from one-directional wanting ("I wanna love you") to mutual recognition ("You wanna love me, / And I wanna love you"). That turn is earned and satisfying, and it gives the ending a genuine sense of arrival.
The strongest craft moment is the redefinition of "gentleman" into "gentle man." Splitting the word to expose its parts, then following it with the pairing of stability in the workplace and empathy at home, is a compact and effective piece of thinking. The poem does something similar with "protector," widening the word from physical defense to protection "from a man's inconsistency." These lines carry the poem's clearest ideas because they slow down and examine a single word rather than reaching for a large abstraction.
By contrast, the opening leans on abstractions that do less work. "Intertwine our spirits like braids / Interlock our souls like dreads" reaches for concrete images, but braids and dreads are close enough in kind that the two lines land as a single idea stated twice rather than as building intensity. Choosing one image and letting it stand, or pairing it with something drawn from a different sensory register, would give the comparison more traction.
A few lines trade specificity for near-rhyme, and the sound sometimes leads the sense. "Loving you made me stronger, / And I'll probably live longer" is an example: "probably" introduces a hedging, casual note that undercuts the earnestness elsewhere, and the rhyme feels like the reason the claim about living longer appears at all. Reworking that couplet so the second line delivers an image rather than a rhymed assertion would keep the sincerity intact.
One line to check is "makes your past demons flea your soul." The intended word is almost certainly "flee." As written, "flea" changes the meaning in a way that likely was not intended, and a proofreading pass would catch it.
The clearest opportunity for revision lies in grounding the poem's emotional claims in specific detail. Much of the middle relies on stated qualities — provider, protector, humility, deference, trust — without a single concrete scene to show them in action. The "gentle man" and "protector" passages already gesture toward specifics; extending that instinct, letting one small remembered moment stand in for the abstract virtues, would let the reader feel the relationship rather than being told about it.
