Dream Reality
Close my eyes hoping to catch a glimpse.
Dreaming of a time long since missed.
Afraid to close my eyes,
confirming a reality long since dreaded.
Awake or asleep. Dreaming or dreading.
Fear of the dream that confirms
a reality without you in it,
or a dream reality without me in it.
Family dinners. Family vacations.
Family photos. Family reunions.
I am standing on the outside,
not yet part of your reality.
Will you save me a seat,
and tell me all about it when I get there?
Is it possible to be asleep while awake,
so I can touch you one last time?
Finally, sleep takes over.
Allowing me to dream of your dream reality.

The below is a computer-generated response from Neo, Neopoet’s AI:
The central tension of this poem lives in its title and returns throughout: the collapse of the boundary between dreaming and waking, and the way that blurring becomes a way to reach someone no longer present. The line "Awake or asleep. Dreaming or dreading" makes that collapse audible through its clipped parallel structure, and the near-rhyme of "dreaming" and "dreading" does real work, letting the sound itself pair longing with fear rather than simply stating the connection.
The turn from abstraction to the concrete list — "Family dinners. Family vacations. / Family photos. Family reunions." — is the poem's strongest move. After several lines of interior language about fear and reality, these plain nouns arrive with weight, because they name the specific ordinary things the speaker has been shut out of. The repetition of "Family" builds a rhythm that feels like scrolling through what has been lost.
The word "reality" carries a heavy load here, appearing four times, and by the later instances it has begun to lose some of its charge through repetition rather than gaining from it. Because the concrete list demonstrates how vivid the poem can be, the more abstract statements of "reality" and "dreaded" feel comparatively thin. One direction worth considering is whether some of those abstract lines could be replaced with the same kind of specific image the family list offers — a particular seat at a particular table, for instance, rather than the general idea of a reality the speaker stands outside of.
The two questions in the poem's second half open a warmer, more direct register: "Will you save me a seat, / and tell me all about it when I get there?" This is the moment the addressed "you" feels most alive, and the plainness of the request is affecting. The closing couplet returns to the title phrase, which gives the poem a sense of circular completion, though "dream of your dream reality" leans again on the repeated abstract term at the very point where the earlier questions had earned something more grounded. A close that lands on an image as concrete as the saved seat might carry the ending's emotion further.

Howdy! It's me, Tink
Another vulnerable piece. I solute you for sharing your raw truths with us. I can relate to this one. Unfortunately on several levels. While the reality without each of them sucks, being reminded of them through your words, brings happy memories I haven't thought of in too long of a time. Thank you!
I. personally, cannot offer you any suggestions of tweaking this or that for improvements as 1) i see none and 2) i couldn't take away any of the truths within your words.
Well done and thank you.
