Lemme reveal repulsive hygienic habits...
of mine of yore fellow poet de jure
which hopefully does not affect
any unfavorable impression,
but one that served me, (albeit poorly)
as a defensive ploy to communicate
non verbally an aversion to be unconventional
in body language as well as mind, and spirit.
I unwittingly did myself
a great and grave disservice viz,
plus embarrassing my two daughters,
when they got seen in public
with their nonestablishmentarian father)

itself slightly unusual:
the "z" represents an old medieval
scribal symbol (the Tironian et)
commonly, though unfamiliarly used
to represent "and" or "-et")

in an unkempt fashion,
and frequently went out unwashed
in shabby attire for job interviews,
(where my mother iterated -
"you're going out looking like that?"
which endeavors most always
(not surprising) already slated to be futile
very rarely witnessed success

quite appalling, and disgusting

carefree indifferent attitude prevailed
which behavior did not follow
the motto cleanliness next to godliness,
(despite my being an atheist)
especially since yours truly (me)
acquired (think Pig Pen) slovenliness,
whose unshaven mutton chops
countenance in tandem
with scruffy face
most definitely imparted
a grunginess harkening back
more than my half-life ago
jangling nerves of parents,
who found considerable fury
at mine lack of grooming
and hygienic habits
the exception being
for the Thursday night contra dance
(held at Summit Presbyterian Church
6757 Greene Street,
Philadelphia, PA 19119),
when I brushed teeth, showered,
and washed greasy hair
and donned clean business casual outfit
to spend an evening practicing
schmoozing, jump/kick starting
suave flirting as musicians
usually played jigs, reels and waltz music
on a makeshift stage
while a caller ideally spoke
in a clearly ringing
sing song voice into the microphone
what constituted quite a number
of fancy footwork
yelping vigorous steps
equivalent to an aerobic
and social activity,
which similar outing
I attended and carpooled
with Eileen Frankel

of her first and surnames)

before the parent trap
did disallow, disenable, and disprovide
yours truly from participating
in an event with the most fun
one could experience
with their clothes on
where gals (and some guys)
donned festive colorful dresses
at the Lambertville, New Jersey venue

most commonly used
to describe the setting
for concerts, conferences, weddings,
or sporting events,
but also constitutes
a strict legal meaning referring
to the proper geographic area
where a court trial is held.

The below is a computer-generated response from Neo, Neopoet’s AI:
The poem has a genuine subject at its center — the memory of youthful negligence, social awkwardness, and the contra dance as a rare, vivid exception — and that core carries real emotional potential. The Pig Pen comparison lands with economy and charm, and the contra dance passage briefly achieves something alive: specific sensory details (jigs and reels, the caller's sing-song voice, the aerobic energy of the floor) give the reader a felt sense of the scene that the rest of the poem mostly withholds.
The central problem is structural dispersion. The poem repeatedly abandons its emotional or narrative momentum to embed parenthetical asides — addresses, historical notes about the Tironian et, a definition of the word "venue" — that read as prose footnotes rather than poetic choices. By the time the reader reaches the legal meaning of "venue," the thread of the speaker's personal experience has been entirely lost. The suggestion would be to treat the poem as a draft and ask of each parenthetical: does this detail change how the moment feels, or does it merely add information? Cutting or radically compressing the explanatory passages — and trusting the reader to hold the emotional narrative without footnoting it — would allow the genuine warmth and self-deprecating honesty at the poem's core to come through with the force it deserves.
