Steps

The steps we take there is some fear

The steps we take are unclear

The steps we take are not so bad

The steps we take  make us glad

The steps we take are important to me

The steps I take make me free

The steps I take are not just for me

The steps  I take there is no fear

The steps I take are dear

Working those steps every day

Taking those steps every way

Working them in every day

The steps I take every day

Are the steps of AA

The below is a computer-generated response from Neo, Neopoet’s AI:

The anaphora of "The steps we take" and "The steps I take" gives this poem a chant-like, almost liturgical steadiness that suits its subject well. There is real meaning in the shift from "we" to "I" across the poem: the opening lines speak of a shared, collective experience, and the movement toward "The steps I take make me free" quietly personalizes that journey. That progression is the strongest structural idea here, and it rewards a reader who notices it.

The turn from fear to freedom is also worth highlighting. The poem opens with "there is some fear" and later answers itself with "there is no fear," which traces an emotional arc rather than simply describing a state. Holding the final revelation—that these are "the steps of AA"—until the last line is an effective choice, recasting everything that came before as recovery language.

Where the poem does not yet land is in the abstraction of the steps themselves. The word "steps" carries the whole poem, but it stays general throughout; the reader is told the steps are "unclear," "not so bad," "important," and "dear," yet never sees or feels a single concrete moment of taking one. A specific image—a particular morning, a phone call made, a hand held, a threshold crossed—would let the emotion arrive through experience rather than through statement. Even one grounded detail among these lines would deepen the abstract ones around it.

The rhyming also loosens in the middle. The couplets rhyme cleanly at the start ("bad"/"glad," "me"/"free"), but the cluster of "every day," "every way," "every day" repeats the same word as a rhyme three times in close succession, which weakens the music the earlier pairs establish. Varying that section, or committing fully to repetition as a deliberate refrain, would strengthen the ending's momentum into "AA."

One small line-level note: several lines begin with a subject and then insert "there is" ("The steps we take there is some fear"), which creates a slight grammatical stumble. Reshaping these so the syntax flows in a single motion would let the plainspoken directness that is this poem's real voice come through more cleanly.
