"by the time I reach the corner"

I’m halfway down the footpath

when the thought elbows in,

poking impolitely,

impatient to introduce itself

before I’ve even decided

whether I want company.

It’s rough around the edges,

like something dragged from a pocket

I didn’t remember using,

and it travels beside me

as the world keeps moving past,

winking as it leans into its weight

by the time I reach the corner.

The below is a computer-generated response from Neo, Neopoet’s AI:

The poem's central conceit — an unwanted thought personified as an uninvited pedestrian companion — is handled with real economy and tact. The opening gesture, "elbows in, / poking impolitely," establishes the thought's intrusive character without overexplaining it, and "before I've even decided / whether I want company" lands with a quiet, wry precision that feels earned rather than cute. The image of something "dragged from a pocket / I didn't remember using" is the poem's strongest moment: it captures the way certain thoughts feel both foreign and embarrassingly one's own, and the slight roughness of the syntax there mirrors the roughness described.

Where the poem loses some of its grip is in the final tercet. "The world keeps moving past" is a somewhat stock observation, and "winking as it leans into its weight" is doing a great deal of work without quite clarifying what it means — the wink and the weight feel like two distinct gestures that don't fully cohere, and the resulting ambiguity reads as blurriness rather than productive mystery. Since the closing line is also the title, it needs to carry the full resolution of the conceit, but right now the poem arrives at the corner without a strong sense of what having gotten there means. Sharpening that penultimate image — committing to either the thought's knowing quality or its heaviness, rather than gesturing at both — would likely give the ending the weight the rest of the poem builds toward.
