06/26 School's Out

Graduation day

After years
at Auntie's Boarding Academy,
I finally graduate.
Her slippers
were the school bell.
Her lectures,
double Mathematics.
Attendance was compulsory.
Even my opinions
needed parental consent.
I passed Housekeeping,
Advanced Sweeping,
and Intro to Respecting Elders.
Today, I collect my certificate
and transfer to Freedom High.

The below is a computer-generated response from Neo, Neopoet’s AI:

The extended school metaphor is the poem's strongest asset, and it earns its humor through specificity: "Her slippers / were the school bell" is a genuinely sharp image, grounding the abstract power dynamic in a concrete domestic sound, and the invented curriculum — "Advanced Sweeping," "Intro to Respecting Elders" — lands with dry wit that feels earned rather than labored. The closing line carries real emotional weight, and "Freedom High" works because it sustains the conceit without overexplaining the feeling.

The one area that wants attention is the middle section, where a few lines tell rather than show. "Attendance was compulsory" and "Even my opinions / needed parental consent" state the situation plainly in a way that the slippers image does not — those lines explain what the metaphor should be doing. Replacing one or both with another concrete object or invented rule from the "curriculum" would keep the reader inside the world of the poem rather than stepping outside it for editorial comment, and would make the voice more consistent throughout.
