The White Rose

A garden full of roses so red,
There stands a rose so white.
They call it different.
Did you ask what it feels like?

Neopoet AI [2026-06]

The below is a computer-generated response from Neo, Neopoet’s AI:

The poem's central image — a single white rose among red ones — carries real potential as a metaphor for difference or otherness, and the setup in the first two lines establishes that contrast cleanly. The turn toward a question at the end is an interesting instinct, inviting the reader into reflection rather than providing a tidy conclusion.

The poem currently moves too quickly to land with full effect. "They call it different" names the theme directly rather than showing it through image or detail, which flattens the emotional weight the imagery could carry. The closing question also shifts into second person somewhat abruptly, and "Did you ask what's it like?" is grammatically awkward in a way that reads as unintentional rather than stylistically deliberate. Sitting longer with the white rose itself — its texture, its silence among the red, how it is looked at or ignored — would let the reader feel the difference rather than being told about it, and would give the final question something richer to push against.

The White Rose

Hello, winter!

Welcome to Neopoet!

Hmm... I'm tempted to disagree with AI regarding the movement of the poem.  For me, it needs abruptness to make the reader feel the tension.  But I am wondering if both "they" and "you" should be used here, and the intent in using both.

I'm really enjoying this piece!  I might be tempted to title it simply, "The Rose" to give it its full respect.

Thank you!

Dear Lavender,Thank you so…

Dear Lavender,

Thank you so much! I cannot even tell you how excited and grateful I am for your comment. I love and appreciate your feedback so much.

For me, literature is a form of pure self-expression. I believe it doesn't always have to follow strict rules—it just has to be true. I wanted to share the reasons behind the choices you noticed:

Using 'they' and 'you': I used 'they' to show the crowd of people around me and all their loud opinions. But when I ask the question, I switch to 'you' because I wanted to step away from the crowd and ask every single reader individually. I want each person to stop and think for themselves.

The Title: I chose 'The White Rose' instead of just 'The Rose' because I wanted to honor a specific group of people. To me, the White Rose represents people who are different—like writers or artists who don't join the usual race in life. Where I come from, writing is very uncommon and people can judge you for it. I wanted to honor those unique souls.

Being Direct: I know poetry usually uses hidden meanings, but for that line, I wanted to be completely direct instead of beating around the bush. People who are different have had to hide for too long, and I didn't want them to hide behind metaphors here. I wanted the reader to see them clearly right away, so instead of guessing the meaning of the poem, the reader starts asking why different people are treated so differently.
