Server status
UPDATE: The site is back online. Another downtime (approximately 1 hr) will be necessary in the next week or so. More details to follow.
Our server crashed today. When the server crashed, the database did not shut down properly. Our content server (which serves most image files) also failed to start. We've now resolved these issues. We're still not entirely sure what caused the crash, but we suspect our main hard drive is failing.
We think it's time to retire the drive -- it's been working continuously for 21,878 hours (about 912 days), and computer science literature suggests that may be near the breaking point for this drive. We do backup our server daily, but it's much better to preemptively try to avoid any downtime associated with a permanent breakdown of the drive.
We've taken about $200 out of our general fund to purchase a new solid state hard drive (which should offer much better performance in addition to being more reliable than a mechanical drive). We would appreciate any contribution from our community to help us replenish this fund.
If all goes well, we plan to install the drive on July 17 or 18. This will cause about 5 - 8 hours of downtime as we reinstall the operating system and tune the new configuration.
