The Blues Is Alright
I've been listening to the top 100 Break-up Songs on internet radio today. No wonder, I'm feeling kind of down. Too much achey-breaky heart stuff. I've switched over to the top 100 Blues Songs and I feel better already. I love the blues, especially Chicago, Texas and the Delta Blues. I never get tired of listening to it.
We used to have a radio station here that had an afternoon blues program called "It's All The Blues" that I used to listen to everyday. I called the request line alot to ask Mr. Z to play my favorite blues songs. During one of our conversations, I asked the DJ why he thought people were drawn to the blues. He said listening to a sad blues song made the person's own problems seem not so awful. I liked his answer. I finally confessed that I was asking more for myself because I was always wanting him to play hauntingly beautiful but sad blues songs like "I Wouldn't Treat A Dog The Way You Treated Me." Mr. Z said he was attracted to them, too. I felt I'd made a friend that day and did eventually get to meet Mr. Z. It was the night Carey Bell and Bill Wharton came to town and played at this joint on the river. I had fun meeting Mr. Z but I have to admit getting to talk to Carey Bell after he climbed down from the stage was about as good as it gets. That man sure can play a mean blues harp.
I'm listening to Willie Dixon sing "I Ain't Superstitious" at the moment and everything is right with the night.
