I am a Selfish Man
That's the simple fact of the matter. Everything I do in my life is geared toward making my life more enjoyable and meaningful and easier. Every single thing.
Luckily I know the difference between instant gratification and lasting happiness. Lucky for me, lucky for my family, and lucky for society.
Huh? What do I mean by that?
It is lucky for me because I see the lives of people who concentrate on being happy by the second rather than being happy. They cut corners, they rush through life, looking for the next high (emotional, physiological, psychological, etc.), they use people and their surrounding as disposable items and I have decided that this lifestyle does not work for me, so I do not participate in it. It will not satisfy me and though it may tempt me, temptation is an indulgence for me, not a lifestyle.
It is lucky for my family because I want the considered love and respect of my parents, siblings, children, spouses when they exist, and those whom I have come to view as family through shared outlook or interest. So I make myself available to them to listen and support and help and just be there. They do the same for me, we are in need of this environment and as it will not create itself, we selfishly create it to serve our needs. We don’t keep score because that’s pathetic, not selfish.
It is good for society because I realise that since I want a safe life and sufficient food and shelter and care I will be less worried should I extend those wishes through action and aid others in achieving the same. So I get involved and donate what I can and lend a hand where it may help and work for my security by making those around me more secure.
Because, as selfish as I am and I am pretty damn selfish, I have found that the path of least resistance is not being a prick when it is not required.
This is not a new concept, of course. You can call it enlightened self interest and I have in the past but I've decided that puts too fine a point on it and presents it as a noble thing people of superior quality do and I've had it up to my left nut with folks pretending merit. You've seen them, they are the one telling you they pray, telling you how much they do for others, telling you how selfless and nice and deserving they are. And they do all of this before you can ask and I am tired of trying to be nice to these pricks.
So, I will be selfish because by being selfish and working to secure what I have learned is important has the effect of making me a value to society. My intent is only to make my life easier but intent is not the issue, effect is. The reason the road to Hell is paved with good intentions is simple. People with the best of intentions want to tell you who you can marry, who can have children, where you can work, what you can eat, what you can read or listen to or see. People with the best of intentions are a bunch of ultra right and left wing nut cases and they can kiss my ass.
So I'll concentrate on being selfish and the world can reap the benefits.
Now, I have no idea how or why but some idiot with the best intentions will decide this blog is a personal attack on them. What a moron.
