the human animal does,
we have religion and psychology
philosophy and poetry to answer
our perplexity in the bloody arena
we, the modern gladiators,
in the human jungle where we forget
our humanity, escape into the fantasy
of reality TV

absurdly wonder why
nature is not nurtured when we
ask the bear to dance and
the wolf to bear her pups
in glass zoos

while we cage ourselves in our living rooms,
hardly venturing out for fear
of our own species.
