Class Who Needs It
Amazing 55 years old and, I never needed until today to look for the word class in the dictionary. It’s a word I never like to use, unless in a friendly or sporting term. Definitely not in a social term, as in, middle, upper, or working. When I read what it can be lent to, it’s a word we could do without.
Take for instance this description, a group of people within a society who share the same social and economic status. What does that mean. Well I have found three meanings, all different , but at the same time, specific to human life.
1. The structure of division in society by the social or economic grouping of it’s members.
2. A major category in taxonomic classification of related, comprising
a group of orders.
3. Assign somebody to a group.
All three tell us that, social class is not random. It does not just happen to you, your family, neighbour, street or town. But is a conscious decision by a group of humans, to divide society to suit a specific need. That need being created not to help all in society, but to make sure a certain group never need go without comfort. This group being the most selfish of society, have with inducement to others. Sought to play on human fears, and to a large degree our basic needs. So as to gain the best, for themselves, with barely a scant regard to the needs largest part of society.
The inducement being that, if they control the needs and fears of the largest part. The middle order themselves might get to join their group. And as some of our people aspire, to reach this utopian dream. They are slowly moulded to comply, and given certain status. And then begins the structure to our life, where the largest part are denied certain needs. But always being guided by the people who gain status, are kept a good distance away from the selfish group, so not to disturb.
The people who aspire to the selfish group, become known as the middle order. And the large group they control, are the working order. And the selfish group are known as the upper order. The middle order consist of religious leaders, who play on the many superstitions fed to the working order. Also you have the law lords and their minions, who have rules designed to keep control of the largest group. And if all else fails, we have the bosses, another part of the plan to keep order. The lords and religious leaders tell the lower order, they must work to supply the many needs of the upper order, as well as their own. And the bosses are there to decide, who is allowed the task of supplying those needs.
And so begins the cycle. The many from the working order, working forthe needs of the upper order, controlled by the law lords, and Religious leaders, from the middle order. The bosses giving and taking that work, from workers, to help keep order. Make up what is known as society. All was well until the upper order, being disturbed by the working orders rumblings. And the middle order complicit with the many, trying to get a better share of society’s takings. Gave even more power to the middle order. So trying to avert disaster. And that was the beginning of politics as we now know it. And on we go to parliament, an extra large building housing two great debating chambers. One chamber for the middle order, so as to convince them that they really did have power. With an even bigger chamber for the upper order, to change policies and laws they did no like. So nothing really changed, the middle order got to stay in charge of the working order, overseen by the upper order. And the working order, just worked for what was given to them.
Everything was good, until, some activists from the working order, started to talk about equality. And eventually more of the working order, prepared to fight for equality. Then we nearly had a revolution, averted by some of the middle order. Convincing the upper order that, if they gave the working order a vote. They could convince the worker order how to use it, maintaining order. Time past, and all was cosy for the upper order. Then some of working order started, to educate themselves in the way politics could be used. Standing on the street corners, demanding that people listen to their views.
Convincing the working order, that they were about making life better for all. Some getting elected to parliament, and disrupting, what until then had been the domain of the middle, and upper order. And having the temerity to call themselves socialists, arguing that all men and women were equal. Dispelling once and for all the myth, not in no small amount spread by religious leaders. That some men and women were born, to be of an higher order, deserving of the largest share in life. If I conclude by saying, the reason this rant was started. Was hearing people of today’s perceived higher order, saying that working people suffer the politics of envy. Well I say, we do not suffer from the politics of envy, we just suffer. And when we try to change society through political means, we have to discuss the social order. And being that the three meanings for class, given at the start all mention groupings, or order we can’t avoid class.
