Can't We All Just Get Along?
No.
That's the short answer, if it offends you, leave now because it won't get any better and I will mock and taunt those weak willed and blithering morons who decide they will "call me out" or whatever it is spineless folks do via the InterWebs to make themselves feel more important.
There are members of Neopoet.com who are content to post their writing and having people gush over it and there are members of Neopoet.com who are content to gush over people's writing and there are members of Neopoet.com who are more interested in critique than compliments and improvement over socializing.
That is neither good nor bad, it is gravity and gravity does not change, under the current definition of physics, merely because we want it to do so.
For the first two (2) groups of people there is nothing on Neopoet.com that needs to change. They can post and nominate and 5-star and gush to their heart's content. For the folks interested in critique, things need to change.
Does this mean I am looking for Neopoet.com to exclude parties one (1) and two (2)? Not really because I come from a large family and work in corporate America and I am adept at ignoring people with whom I do not need to interact and as the parties referenced bring nothing to the table for me, well, I don't need to interact with them and do not.
For the third party, the folks here for critique and competent feedback and improving their skills through more than repetition, Neopoet.com has very little to offer at this time. Certainly we've managed to find each other and work occasionally but the sad truth is the folks clamoring for attention consume much of the resources and do nothing to extend the reputation or quality of Neopoet.com.
That is quality as a poetry workshop. Those who want to be offended and pretend I am comparing talent can bite my ass. You passive - aggressive parasites (work it out) need to rent a spine. If you want to be offended, let me know, I have a talent for that.
Several different discussions are happening concerning ramping up the workshop side of things and in every case the same people who would never participate in it are the ones saying we should not do it. Oh and the Diamond Council recommends you spend 3 months salary on a ring. You can trust them just as far.
Because this is not about talent, it is about intent. My intent is to become a better writer. For Neopoet.com to be part of this I need it to offer an environment where I can depend on competent critique and tools. This critique and these tools are abhorrent to those who would never use them.

One thing is certain, if we let the same folks who make up party 1 and party 2 decide on tools and critique and the workshop environment structure then we will get the same popularity contest we have now and while they may be happy, most people actually here to improve will go elsewhere.
No me though as I know that my mere presence is a cause of annoyance to some. There are people who would look at the situation and think:
"What am I doing wrong that these people do not like me."
Let me put this in perspective.
Way back in the late 1980's I was in charge of PC Support at a large company. There was a secretary who came to me one day and asked for a 2nd disk drive because Secretary X had one. Technical considerations made the installation of a second drive cost prohibitive but a week later I get a support call to fix her machine. She had jammed two floppy disks into the $400 drive and destroyed it and them. When I queried what had happened she told me:
"X has two (2) drives and I want (2) drives."
This person referred to me as an air head.
I came to this conclusion: If a complete and utter moron thinks poorly of me, I must be doing something right.
And if the members of party 1 and party 2 find me annoying, then I must be doing something right.
There are people who will take this blog post as a personal attack. These people are idiots.
