"Honors and benefits already at the age of nine!"
One of the basic truths in life is that we often imagine, when we are young, that we possess some undiscovered talent that if only others could recognize, they would understand our greatness. It's a natural reaction to the insecurity everyone feels and can be tempered into confidence or fester into arrogance.
We see this a lot in new writers. Not necessarily young writers, but new writers. People who have not read the rules but are determined to break them, people who decry the creative process of others and insist their way is right, people who cannot take critique but believe they are competent to offer it.
It's understandable if not to be tolerated in youth and new writers, it's just sad and pitiful in those who will never learn because they cannot conceive they are doing anything wrong. After all, don't people know they are special?
I have been writing for over 40 years now and while I have written decent stuff for my varied ages, it really wasn't until I learned to take criticism in my 20's that I actually stopped writing from mere talent and started writing from talent tempered with skill. And here I am, 48, and I am still learning how to do it right. Still learning, still making mistakes, still trying to improve.
So when I stumbled across a note someone posted indicating they believed they were at the pinnacle of their ability, and they only had to finish up their "masterpiece," well, I was amused.
Folks, Dickens wrote to pay the rent and no one on this site will intentionally create classic literature. They best you can hope for is to write well and apply skill and glean knowledge from other members and work to get your writing noticed. That will not happen through constant:
"BEST POEM EVER! i LOVE IT"
"THANK YOU, I AGREE"
commentary.
If you honestly believe you have nothing to learn from the community at Neopoet, well, you are an idiot. But hey, at least you get to tell each other how much better your work is than all the rest and maybe, just maybe, you'll get the Red Ryder you've always wanted.
