The Magic Merger!
'He was not like a man for her, he was an incarnation, a great phase of life. She saw him press the water out of his face, and look at the bandage on his hand. And she knew it was all no good, and that she would never go beyond him, he was the final approximation of life to her" WOMEN IN LOVE p.249 D.H.Lawrence
In this relationship, the man is to her what the psychologists now like to refer to as a "Limited experience". There is nothing on the other side of that "EDGE" for her.
THus the meaning of the earlier - "she could know no more" now becomes somewhat clearer. She simply cannot digest him, cannot put him behind her and go on to experience something else. Her psychological development is frozen by the image of this man.....
Just LOVED the line...."She would never go beyond him" and thought I'd share the magic of the two great arts: Psychology and Literature! BjR
