BARRIERS

This is dedicated to all those who are suffering, have suffered or suspect they may suffer barriers to relationships ... walls built by age-gaps, distance, misunderstandings and a million other reasons, some soluble, some impossible to break down without some damage to others. You may even have to settle for less than perfect - as the local saying goes hereabouts “Owt’s better’n nowt!”           * owt’s better’n nowt = ought is better than nought = anything is better than nothing

 THE AGE GAP: SPRING THING

Laburnum clusters of bright
yellow tears.
Just another Spring thing
in the warm mellow years

Time, old man, far past time
to change your dreams
for memories,
to know your hopes are hopeless;
to let go, fall free,
lie alone,
and each day die a little:
like another Spring thing
hanging on.

So sad I cannot share the Spring
so sad that so many dead brown leaves
rattle in my head
And I feel so old.

So sad that a little while ago
the daffodils were tiny golden suns
and tulips glowed
And I felt so young

And Oh, so very sad, my love
that I cannot share the Spring
since Spring belongs to you.

DISTANCE : AWAYDAYS

Remembering you
my heart is a pebble
skimmed over water.
 Reaching for you
my hand is a traveller
lost in the miles
 Thinking of you
I count absent days
and then [O then]
the days to our meeting

PAST SECRETS : HOLDING ON

What's so precious you hold on so?
so terrible you cannot tell?

Hold back, if you must,
though I would share the pain
as well ask my portion of the joy.

Hold back, if you need,
though I would never claim
a greater part than you would give.

Hold back, if you fear,
though I am often told
a lonely hurt hurts more alone.

Hold back, if holding holds you still;
Hold back, though holding's holding still;

Hold back, and while you're holding on,
hold on to me,
and I'll hold on.

I’m gonna comment on each

I'm gonna comment on each segment as best I can here, but it's a lot for the reader to digest all at once. THE AGE GAP: SPRING THING -why is it that, in this country, we have almost no respect for those older than 30? I don't get it. Age is supposed to bring wisdom (and in other cultures reverence). The young tend to piss away their "spring" anyway. I know i take my own youth for granted most of the time. The narrator seems to have a very melancholy perspective of aging. In my opinion, perspective makes all the difference. DISTANCE : PERSPECTIVES I liked this, it has a nice flow. very picturesque. HOLD ON "a lonely hurt hurts more alone" so true. I also like the flow of this. -Very good flow. I'm not so sure the second one works as well with your theme, it doesn't mention as clearly a relationship to another being. and if you want to tie in a nature theme to the three (as the first mentions Spring and the second mist) the third doesn't contain that element. bravo (I enjoy ready and commenting on your work) thank you, sha

Thank you, Sha for your

Thank you, Sha for your comprehensive and sensitive analysis. I'm grateful for the time and effort you've invested. The age thing ... sadly, age certainly doesn't bring wisdom, particularly with respect to relationships [at least speaking - somewhat shame-facedly - for myself] ... but I know what you mean. This particular middle poem is I think more suited to the theme than PERSPECTIVES. After some thought I retained the last poem, though I did eventually learn the answer to the question posed. I wrote a sequel though I never posted it [too explicit and too potentially recognisable to the subject]. I did however write a highly metaphorical version: POLAR ROSE, which if I remember correctly you've read. Thanks once again - I enjoyed reading your comments.
