HELLS BELLS

HELL’S BELLS

Perched precariously on my lap
she studies the wreckage of my Bells stricken face.

She notes with some surprise
the difference in eyes:
the relative size and refusal to wink
at her request of the lazy left-hand lid.

[such rumination
for such a harum-scarum child]

Her fingers glide down the land-slipped cheek
and trace the leftward downward slump
of lips which only smile on one side.

[Feather-light
for such a firecracker child]

Serious faced she tuts and sighs
and explains [as if I’m a simple child]
That I cannot accompany her and Nana
To the busy bustling Mall.
“Your face is too poorly!”
she announces in such sorry tones
How sweet!

[such sympathy
at her self-centred age]

She adds, by way of explanation,
“And they’ll all be laughing at you”

[typically terse and true
for such an anchored honest child]

Hi Meic...

Good to see you... This is a most generous write, and I love the way you've pointed out the honesty of the very young... anyone that is around any children will be able to relate to this, with a tale of their own... glad to see you on the board... Richard

Thank you Chrys … though

Thank you Chrys ... though the cosmetic damage was the least problematic part of Bell's Palsy - the problems in eating drinking and articulation were worst and persisted some time after my face 'straightened' It didn't help that I was in very poor condition before the BP struck. But hey! getting bettter now. Not much of a poem, I'm sorry - but starting to write again is a bit like learning to walk again ... stumbles, trips and falls with little semblance of grace. But at least some forward movement. Mike "not all matterings of mind equal one violet" ~ e e cummings ~

Wow

Pretty harsh thing to come out of a child's mouth! We've missed you, Mike, an so happy to have you back. ~Jess K. ---------------------------------------------------- -"Just because you have one, doesn't mean you need to be one..." Thanks, Jess.I think Jasmine

Thanks, Jess. I think Jasmine was trying in her forthright way to protect me from something she would hate if it happened to her ... wel, that's what I tell myself, anyway. Mike "not all matterings of mind equal one violet" ~ e e cummings ~

Hello my friend,Luckily

Hello my friend, Luckily there are precious few horses here in Greater Manchester. Plenty of sharks [the two-legged kind] who seemed to be frightened of nobody ... but the simple directness of children is certainly a wonder to be cherished. Hey Meic....

...a fairly "gripping write"...and quite a large undertaking. Don't worry 'bout frightening the horses, that's MY job ! I may need you to help me round 'em up, though. Where've you been, anyway? Nonetheless...you're still the consumate wordsmith that you always were. (In other words, your power of vocabulary articulation is still intact.) Nice write.....easy read. #{:>{)]@===== write on ! docmaverick.

Thanks for the ‘welcome

Thanks for the 'welcome back' Where have I been? The Bell's Palsy - unpleasant though it certainly was - was the least of my problems last year. Much more serious and debilitating were two episodes of pneumonia which laid me low for long periods. The gauntness and lank hair in the photo owes more to the effects of pneumonia than to BP. I'm still 'learning anew' in terms of writing though! Mike "not all matterings of mind equal one violet" ~ e e cummings ~
