squirrels an' their politics

squirrels an' their politics

---------

[they're] as headstrong as
an allegory on the banks of
the [n]ile.

                                                    ---Sheridan
---------

although they of necessity share
space here on the patio (due to
its limited size), local squirrels
are not by nature congregant
critters like prairie dogs ---

which are squirrels

--- are.

they do not gather together with
communal purpose in teamwork fashion.

however, though they seem to hold
at least a soupcon sense of fairness
in their makeup, their politics
stand firmly in the anarchist camp
versus bolshevist.

the biggest and/or most assertive
bully tends to get what he or she
wants;

and tends is the right word,
I think, because the underdogs (or
is that undersquirrels?) do sometimes
employ artful ways of getting around/
past mingy, overaggressive types!

especially when young, they do engage
one another ---

very entertainingly, I
might here assert

--- in quite complex hide-and-seeks
and games of tag and it! and even
cockalorums, adhering to (mutually
understood but unwritten) rules of
proper play conduct.

but that aside, they in general hold
a preference for acting alone.

except in matters of sex, of course;
and the males can be meanly aggressive
when insisting on it.

I think that if squirrels did have some
form of government, that rulership
would soon---

no matter any arguably
laudable merits that might reveal
themselves to a surface probing of its
early stages

--- devolve into a sort of
kakistocracy

(as it seems, misfortunately,
to be in the habit of doing for the bulk
of humankind).

in other words, they'd probably be no
brighter about it than are we.

so maybe anarchy is ---

but I'd better quit before I put you
to sleep.

---------

I can only imagine some of the outrageous
detail that might appear in a jonathan
swift satirical treatment of a vexing ---

you know, the same swift who wrote
gulliver's travels.

--- a vexing squirrel bureaucracy
indulging, with their color-coded
turbaned heads, in intentionally
bureaucratic inaction, with associated
raging political in-house battles over
turf too lifelike to be comical.

Sorry ...

about the proofreader's mist "treament." Tried alternative fixes, as in trea'ment, tree meant, etc., but nothing worked swells your suggestion. So now fixed --- thanx to your sharp eye, one more sharp than I. Yours again, Chuck

Your "brick ...

in a wall" might be apt here: As I understand it, a squirrel male post-intercourse will place a plug over/into a female's vagina so that unfortunate johnnies-come-lately can't pass on their somewhat differing DNA. So much for sextalk. I'm hopeful this limited comment makes it past the library's computer censors. Here goes. Thanx, Chuck

or is that undersquirrels?)I

or is that undersquirrels?) I loved that phrase! My son subscribes to the theory (completely based on his own imagination of course) that there is a secret underground organisation of squirrels - intent on world domination! lol if you would like to here the rest please Pm me - its been very well thought out and would make you smile. Some poets observe human nature - I love the acute observations of animal nature you use in your poetry. Very clever, very well thought out and this made me smile!! Thank you:-) Kaz It's impossible to smile on the outside without feeling better on the inside.

I suspect that ...

squirrels hold tight to their chests many more secrets than they've a valid right to ... Thanx, Chuck PS: By the way, I'm glad to see Harvey's still here.

I must confess ...

that nuts aura teensy part'v my own astonishingly meager diet. So if you can imagine, sometimes I race for a misthrown nut---race against a squirrel, that is---and since I'm slow (and the squirrel fleet), I allus lose. I suppose I could learn not to throw the nut in the first place so I could keep it in hand for my own consumption. But then I'd not get to race. Thanx, Chuck

Ah, the lives and tails of

Ah, the lives and tails of squirrels. (that was a horrible pun I could not resist, sorry!) A revealing glimpse into the squirrel society. Your views of life in the animal kingdom are always engaging. Thanks for sharing. ~ Ronda

Thanx ...

much, Ronda. I do love squirrels. They entertain (and relax) me ... and keep me laughin'. My neighbor immediately to the west calls them rodents, equates them with rats/mice. Which of course they're not. Labels can so mislead. It's sad how critters so different can slide under the same classification/heading. Yours, Chuck

LOL

Squirrels are indeed a riot, and this is a fitting tribute to them. Well done. Thanks for the squirrel-mating 101, I think that was information overload for today. :~) ~Jess K. ---------------------------------------------------- "Johnny was a chemist’s son, but Johnny is no more.
