Arrogance
Let's be clear on one thing up front.
I am not a nice person. I try to be polite, I try to treat others well, but I am not a nice person especially when it comes to one area:
Arrogance.
I can't stand it. I despise it and the people who practice it and make it a hobby to systematically attack, demoralize, shame, and ridicule the actions and people of arrogance.
Arrogance, to me, is not saying "I am good at X" Or "I believe I did well." Or even, "I am more skilled."
Arrogance, to me, is when pride and self-confidence fester and need to tear others down. So when I hear things like "You are all just jealous because the first poem i ever wrote got a hundred hits!" I feel the need to step in.
Y'know, more people will stop and stare at a train-wreck than will a piece of art. It doesn't mean the train-wreck is better, just that the grotesque compilation of what used to be life and purpose fascinates people. The same is true of pedantically written bad poetry. It sucks so bad there is nothing you can do but stare at it and think; "Dear God, had I been less attentive, that could have been me."
Just like the train-wreck.
I've stayed away from the discussions with the people arrogantly posting about their poetry and how much better their swill is than those who are here to submit and listen and aid and grow. Well, that's stopping.
So, if you are convinced you are the best poet in the world and the only way you can express that is through acts of arrogance, you and I will need to talk.
One of us will treat it like a hobby, one of us will go from bluster and cocky to whining and fleeing.
This community has been too tolerant of those who are parasites and I have decided this needs to stop.
And who am I? Just another community member who has found solace and education here, who has been pushed to write better and who has tried to offer thoughtful critique.
I act in no official capacity so those I target, you're not being forced from the community by anyone other than another member who has seen your aberrant actions and decided they must stop.
And, should the community decide my actions are counterproductive, I will listen. That's what will set us apart, you the arrogant prick and me the asshole. I care about more than myself and you are a steaming pile of feces dribbling your trail across the neighborhood while you pretend others envy you your stink and disease.
