I've had a few people ask me for more detail about what the AEC does.
Here goes--
The AEC is responsible for reviewing Advocate applications. We might have on average two or three applications a month. It’s just a matter of discussing the candidate with the other members of the AEC and coming to a mutual decision.
The committee runs the Advocate program– besides working with and motivating Advocates to review poems, the members of the AEC train Advocates to work as “greeters” (we try to individually greet each new member with at least a line or two– perhaps a “Glad to meet another member from South Africa” or a “I really liked your poem XYZ”). They run contests. They will also serve a role running the mentorship program when we get that up and running.
Finally, and, I think, most importantly, the AEC serves as guardian of the our culture. It’s our culture that sets us apart from other poetry sites and really defines who we are.
