The maternal legacy

The maternal legacy

She gazes out of the window to the world beyond

not quite knowing, yet still wondering

not quite sure yet, but still pondering

upon their fate still yet unknown

innocents still to this world, new to its cruelties

yet learning very quickly from a very young age

their eyes being opened to the realities

that they should not yet even be aware of

she realizes that as a parent, over all their mother

she knows, she must never begin to smother

their thirst and need for life

their necessary need to be shielded from strife

it is her destiny now to teach these two

how to live and what not to do

it is her unwritten right to protect what is hers

and protect them she will, against all unseen dangers

it is her fate, one to which she will gladly surrender

her life, her soul and above all her undying eternal love

as mother, matriarch to all future offspring

it is a legacy of love, trust and joy she must now bring

for they are her future, her footprint she will leave in the sands of time

these two souls now so innocent, will one day be free to soar

with nothing to hold them back, or catch them unawares

and embrace the future that will someday be theirs
