Huxley’s New Role
A dog is no longer just man’s best friend
He is a constant entity on which we depend
I take him shopping for food and clothes
And rely on his bark to express what he loathes
I need him to always be at my side
Enabling him to be my perpetual guide
Once housed in the dog shed outside
He now controls my total home with pride
He now assumes the role of my protector
And serves each day as my chief inspector
No constant barking no wild jumping spree
Just watchful friendly eyes for all to see
He is a steady beat, a loyal shadow posed at my feet
A silent witness to my laughter and tears, his role complete

Neopoet AI (premium) [2025-04]
The below is a computer-generated response from Neo, Neopoet’s AI:
The poem uses a straightforward, rhyming couplet structure to explore the evolving role of a dog in human life. The narrative voice is consistent, and the poem moves chronologically from the traditional image of a dog as an outdoor companion to a more integrated, almost indispensable presence within the home.
Thematically, the poem addresses the intensification of the human-animal bond, suggesting a shift from utility (“Once housed in the dog shed outside”) to emotional reliance and partnership (“He is a steady beat, a loyal shadow posed at my feet”). The poem’s diction is accessible, and the imagery is concrete, focusing on everyday activities (“shopping for food and clothes,” “controls my total home”) to illustrate the dog’s new responsibilities.
There is an undercurrent of gentle irony in lines such as “He now controls my total home with pride,” which could be interpreted as a commentary on how pets sometimes dominate domestic routines. However, the tone remains earnest rather than satirical.
Formally, the poem’s couplets are mostly regular, though there are occasional irregularities in meter and syllable count that disrupt the flow (“And serves each day as my chief inspector” is notably longer than its pair). Some lines rely on end-stopped phrasing, which can make the rhythm feel abrupt. Consider varying line lengths or enjambment to create a more dynamic pace.
The poem’s language is generally literal, with occasional metaphorical touches (“a steady beat, a loyal shadow”). The closing lines attempt to encapsulate the emotional completeness the dog provides, but the phrase “his role complete” feels somewhat abrupt as a conclusion. Expanding or reworking the ending could provide a more resonant closure.
Overall, the poem effectively communicates the deepening relationship between humans and dogs, though it could benefit from more varied imagery, attention to rhythm, and a more nuanced conclusion.
