The Forest

The aroma of autumn's decay
Perfumes the air with layered earth—
Oak, pine, and twig, a damp mélange
That crunches beneath my footfall.
This scent, a constant comfort,
Brings me back to the woods I love.

A lone crow's cry shatters the peace,
A warning echoing through the trees,
A chorus heard, though far and near.
The fragrance lingers, a potent perfume,
]As new and sweet as a lover's kiss.

I am a child again, scuffing the ground,
Building small mounds for squirrels to find.
Moss-covered granite offers a seat

For quiet contemplation.
In a shallow marsh, the water is still,
Where trees, once vibrant, now lie submerged,
A somber contrast to the sunlit world.

Lost branches point the way to a home,
A beaver's work, a tapered gnarling.
The small white pines, in their desperate reach,
Cling to the hope of sunlight and age.
Blueberry bushes, now bare and dry,
Mark the end of the harvest season.

As long as this forest endures,
I shall not age.
My spirit, ever youthful and true,
Finds a constant, abiding love in you.

hello Mark,

I love this quiet, contemplative sojourn into both mind and body. There are many things to discover in the forest of both worlds. Many changes now and to come. Your creation resonates deeply with me... We are more than flesh and blood. Thank you for this. reminder. I will hold on to it when the pain becomes too great... my favorite lines are:

As long as this forest endures,
I shall not age.
My spirit, ever youthful and true,
Finds a constant, abiding love in you.

much love, Cat
